There’s a natural inclination for fashion savvy individuals with an eye for splendor to adore the appealing and intriguing colors, patterns and styles of traditional Native American culture. The beauty of the handcrafted goods touches upon the richness of the culture, both past and present, and becomes nearly impossible to resist when incorporated into accessories, clothing and jewelry.

There’s nothing at all wrong about respecting and promoting such a fascinating people through sartorial exposure, but there is a great failure in the fashion community to recognize the difference between supporting a disenfranchised group and treating their inimitable history like a disposable trendy commodity.

Heavy stuff, so how does a fashion conscious and culturally sensitive fashionista cherish turquoise and wear it, too? She does it by following some simple guidelines, appreciating Native American pieces and educating herself on the background—philanthropic and collaborative—of companies selling tribal-inspired goods, all without capsizing into stereotype or costume. Shopping never looked so smart.

You’re Doing it Wrong, Girl

There are few better ways of illustrating how to do something correctly than by contrasting it with the comically bad examples of the mistakes that litter the runways. Fortunately (sadly?), there are numerous cases of celebrities (looking at you, Gwen Stefani) and companies (raise your hand high, Victoria’s Secret) blindly appropriating Native culture. Maybe they didn’t realize their error, though that’s a poor excuse for such high profile brands, but, in order to avoid future offense, read this list of no-nos.

• Don’t shop for native gear from companies that neither employ, consult with or donate to known native people, communities or projects, such as Forever 21 or Urban Outfitters.

• Don’t wear sacred patterns, symbols or designs that aren’t meant for commercial use, especially when printed on panties or bikinis.

• Don’t wear patterns, symbols or designs without becoming familiar with the meaning or backstory of the piece, even if it’s authentic.

• Don’t sport a full Native American “outfit,” replete with headdress, fringe and moccasins, as a costume, whether for a Halloween party or music festival.

Thank You For Being a Friend

If it seems like complicated work determining when and how it’s acceptable to wear Native American inspired clothing, it really shouldn’t. It’s simply a matter of recognizing that respecting a living culture and people supersedes fashion instant gratification. True followers of high-end designers understand that developing a line from an initial inspiration means performing loads of research. Education is the soundest route out of insult and into understanding, and anyone who can study the history of Italian and French fashion houses can delve equally deeply into the robust Navajo, Cherokee or Chickasaw culture. In addition to creating some new brain wrinkles, here are other suggestions for celebrating culturally diverse fashion appropriately:

• Do buy authentic, which means only from Native Americans.

• Do learn about the meaning behind symbols, bags and patterns, and tell others when they ask about the clothing or accessories.

• Do support companies that give back to the Native community or collaborate openly with them; there are many choices.

• Do visit working reservations, museums and heritage events in order to better understand the history, identity and experience of Native peoples.

Obviously, people drape themselves in the stunning clothing of Native Americans because it’s beautiful, fascinating and striking. The reality is, most trend-conscious individuals don’t realize they’re appropriating and disrespecting an entire race of people who are still fighting for basic rights and humane treatment. Serendipitously, fashion and veneration can walk hand in hand with a little education and a lot of thoughtful shopping.

In the movies, there are stunts, and then there are STUNTS! In reviewing the credits for the movie “You’ve Got Mail”, you’ll discover that the film had 2 stunt coordinators and four stunt men. What were the stunts in that film? Did Mr. Hanks walking down a particularly precipitous flight of stairs require a stunt double? Go figure!

Jackie Chan, the superb comedian and martial artist, probably has spent more on buying quality athletic tape to bind his injuries, than most people spend on dining out for a year. His most serious injury resulted when he missed his grip during a leap, and fell 40 feet to the ground. He suffered a fractured skull in which a portion of bone was protruding into his brain. After 8 hours of surgery he was put back together, but still has a plastic plug in his head and now has a slight hearing loss. With a long list of injuries including a broken hip, a broken foot, a twice-broken nose, dislocations, bruises, abrasions, penetrating injuries, Chan has to hold the title for the most durable actor on film.

Excluding martial arts films, there is still quite an impressive laundry list of stars that do their own stunts, and most to date with only minor cuts and bruises. Leading the list are Harrison Ford, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Jason Statham, Daniel Craig, Tom Cruise, Viggo Mortensen, Christian Bale, Robert Downey Jr., and Arnold Schwartzenegger. Downey Jr. was knocked unconscious and required six stitches as the result of the fight scene in “Sherlock Holmes”, and Ford suffered a herniated disc while filming “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, which sidelined him for five weeks. Brandon Lee and Vic Morrow were killed in stunts gone wrong.

On the ladies side, we have Angelina Jolie, Kristen Stewart Halle Berry and Zoe Bell, who have insisted on doing their own stunt work. Of these women, the only one to receive a serious injury to date, has been Berry, who broke her arm filming the movie “Gothika”.

The most curious story of an injury to a major performer happened to Buster Keaton, filming the 1932 film “Sherlock Jr.” In the scene Keaton was supposed to get drenched, but the force of the water knocked him off the water tower and he fell breaking his neck. He did not discover that his neck was broken until 10 years later while visiting a doctor for an unrelated ailment.

The initially critical response to casting Daniel Craig as James Bond swiftly changed to praise with the actor’s amazing portrayal of agent 007. Charismatic similarities were quickly made between Craig and Sean Connery. Part of the attraction of Bond has always been his iconic fashion style. Impeccably dressed at all times, even under the most extreme conditions. No one wears a tuxedo better than Bond but Craig has actually elevated his wardrobe to a whole new level of style. Craig even manages to make the blood spattered lapel pins on his tuxedo look good in a dangerous sort of way.

Craig continued to define and craft his own style in ‘Quantum of Solace’. Casino Royale introduced Craig as Bond, but Quantum of Solace proved that Craig was no fluke. If you're interested in trying this look but don't want to look like a teenager heading to high school in flannel PJ's and a sleep shirt, here's how the pros do it.

Pick the Right Pair of PJ's

Look for a sophisticated set of pajamas instead of separates. Shy away from obvious PJ patterns in favor of monotone pajamas or simple, timeless patterns. Think dots, stripes, Asian-inspired flowers or abstract patterns. Salma Hayek's pajamas almost look like drapey resort wear instead of plain old PJ's. Pay attention to the way the pajamas fit. While an oversized fit is perfectly fine for sleeping or lounging at home, you'll want a more tailored cut to take your PJ's to the streets.

If you're planning to take your pajamas to a special event, upgrade to silk. The fabric has a more luxurious feel that will not only make you feel sexier when wearing them but will make the transition to the event better than cotton or flannel fabrics will.

Carry a statement clutch or accent your outfit with matching jewelry, as Rihanna did when she took the red carpet pajama-clad for the Battleship premier in Japan. While Rihanna's look here is pretty low cut, showing off the star's assets, make sure your silk robe or pajama top won't fall open while you're wearing it for a more indecent sort of exposure.

Pajamas as Separates

While most celebs who have embraced the pajama trend opt for a two-piece look, you can go with pajama separates if you want. In fact, this might be a good way to ease into the pajama trend without fully committing to it. Miranda Kerr wore trendy ikat pajama bottoms on a flight, one place where it's long been accepted to show up in your comfy clothes. She paired the pajamas with a plain white tee and a basic black blazer, then added on a matching handbag and requisite sunglasses. Her look is so chic and laid back that at first glance it seems like resort wear.

Aim for this balance if you're nervous about wearing full-on pajama pants and top. Oprah has more guidelines for wearing pajamas as separates to work, on a date and over the weekend. Wide-legged, loose pajama pants work well when paired with form-fitting tops and statement necklaces. Oprah also suggests a classic PJ top tucked into a pencil skirt for a colorblocked style. Again, fit, pattern and material all help transform the style from the bedroom to the boardroom and the boardwalk.

For many women, getting out of bed in the winter is difficult, not only because it's warm and cozy in bed but because wintertime can bring out feelings of depression. Such seasonal feelings of sadness and isolation are termed SAD, or seasonal affective disorder. This problem affects 4 to 6 percent of the U.S. population, yet 10 to 20 percent of the population may experience some level of wintertime depression. S.A.D. most commonly affects women.

One of the tips that medical professionals tend to offer those with S.A.D. is using artificial light to trick the mind and body into feeling like they've gotten more sunshine. A special light box simulates the longer daytime length of spring and summer, which causes the mind to lighten. Just 15 to 30 minutes a day of this light can help. While I don't use a light box in the winter months, I do follow my own little routine to elevate my mood. I incorporate bright colors in my winter accessories and winter wardrobe. Seeing myself in the mirror in these colors gives my mood a little lift that really gets me through those dark days. Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate this look:

Hat: Hats are the perfect place to begin if you're a bit color-shy. They're small and designed to accent the rest of your look. Start gathering a collection of slouch beanies, winter knits, berets and the like in colorful hues of red, purple, blue, orange, yellow and metallic. Pair the bright hats with dark winter coats, dresses and tights, trousers and sweaters and so on. See how just that little pop of color from the hat catches your eye. Well, it can elevate your mood too!

Scarf: Just like hats, scarves are small enough that you can really go wild here, and they're another a great way for color-shy gals to perk up their wardrobes. For scarves, hunt for colors and patterns you enjoy in a range of textures and weights. Some scarves are perfect for wearing all day with a long sweater dress or tunic, while others — think infinity scarves and wool cowls like this pretty in pink example from Good Night Day — work well for providing that extra bit of warmth on your morning commute.

Winter Coat: Womens coats are so often grey, black and brown: dull colors that match the dull winter sky. Fight drudgery this winter by choosing bright coats in colors that will make you smile when you see them. Try a brightly colored puffy coat for sporting days, or a chipper pea coat. You'll find women's coats in every hue, so take the plunge and make a statement coat your do-piece this season. You'll be right on trend.

Sweater: Sweaters are winter must to get you through those chilly days. And what better way to incorporate color and warmth in one place? I love to collect cashmere cardigans in rainbow hues that I can wear all year round and stock up on a nice corps of thicker wool sweaters that I can next in on long winter weekends. Pair a bright sweater with other bright-colored pieces, or let it stand alone as the color point in your winter palette.

Give these bright pieces colors a try this winter, as well as tights, boots, leggings and accessories, and see whether or not it gives you a little mood lift on those dark and cold days. I know I certainly feel better when I'm dressed in bright, fun pieces.

1. Hammer Pants - His debut in the late 1980s started a trend of baggy wear that bled onto the '90s but was quickly sopped up. MC Hammer graced us with his dance styles and flamboyant parachute-type pants that had the boys of all ages rushing to the store to buy them. While they were surprisingly comfortable, the fad disintegrated into history and most of these leggings turned into nothing more than pajama bottoms.

2. Cyndi's Hair - Girls of all ages were impressed with the hair styles of Cindi Lauper and millions of them had to have it. As Cyndi changed styles more often than Madonna changed lovers, the trend began to take a different meaning. It wasn't about what color or dressing Cyndi's hair was in at the moment, it was about being different and having a flare for the dramatic.

3. Gloves and Jacket - As his popularity escalated, so did Michael Jackson's wardrobe. It was common place to see fans walking around with a single flashy white glove and the red and black leather jacket featured in "Thriller." ·    Color: Get rid of the highlights and think darker and richer colors. The deep browns, auburns and warm tones are a perfect reflection of the winter season.

·    Cut: Longer and soft layers are great for the winter look; it complements the comfy sweaters and cozy scarf look. Shorter hair, opt for long angled layers around your face. Bangs are a great look for most during the winter. You don’t have to worry about heat causing the ugly sticky bang.

·    Styled: Washed and polished off is the best look this winter. Keep it soft by creating large curls with your curling iron. Braids are a great way to look trendy without spending the time on it. For those nights out try a top knot or bun for a fun look.
